Museums in the Landes
Although the Landes is best appreciated for its landscapes and natural activities such as surfing, particularly along the Côte d’Argent, the region has many other facets that deserve a closer look, such as its cultural heritage. To this end, some thirty museums are spread throughout the region, waiting to be discovered. Among them are 5 museums to be discovered without moderation during your stay at the campsite.
1. The Marquèze Ecomuseum
TheMarquèze Ecomuseum is an invitation to a unique experience! Take a trip back in time on the “resiniers” train to Marquèze, a district of the Grande Lande, 4 km away, where you can explore this open-air museum on foot. Visitors can immerse themselves directly in the life of 18th-century Landais, as they see the old houses fully furnished as they were in the 19th century.
Throughout this day of discovery, the visit is punctuated by a variety of activities that showcase the daily life of the area. Visitors can choose from a wide range of events on offer throughout the day, including those showing how a mill works, the work of Landes shepherds, gemmaging, soap-making and much more!
To complete this informative visit, the Marquèze district can also be discovered during a 1-hour guided tour and/or through a treasure hunt adapted for children.
2. Brassempouy prehistosite
The Brassempouy Prehistosite, 35 km from Dax, opens its doors to the discovery of our prehistoric ancestors and their heritage. Among the Prehistosite ‘s collections of Upper Paleolithic objects is a treasure trove of cave art: the famous Dame de Brassempouy. She is also part of a substantial collection of prehistoric statuettes found on the Brassempouy site. To discover all its secrets and the life of the Cro-Magnons, the site offers visitors workshops, guided and digital tours perfectly suited to younger visitors.
3. Despiau Wlérick Museum
When visiting Mont-de-Marsan, it’s impossible not to notice the countless sculptures all over town. And for good reason! The town is a Mecca for 20th-century figurative sculpture. To understand the origins and evolution of this artistic movement, head for the Musée Despiau-Wlérick, which houses works by several artists, including Montois artists Charles Despiau and Robert Wlérick, who gave their names to the museum.
4. Museum of Earthenware and Table Rats
The Musée de la faïence et des arts de la table welcomes you to Samadet, which in the 18th century was chosen as the site for a “royal earthenware factory”. For over 100 years, Samadet earthenware was exported on the same invoice. Today, the production site has disappeared in favor of a museum that showcases the know-how “made in Samadet” through its collections of several hundred objects, as well as the history and evolution of tableware.
5. Hydraviation Museum
Embark on a fascinating journey into the world of transatlantic flight at the Musée de l’Hydraviation in Biscarrosse. Located on the mythical Latécoère base, the museum exhibits numerous seaplanes that have flown the skies, as well as the history of these incredible “Paquebots des Airs”, as they were then known.
