The Landes: the ideal destination for a successful cycling holiday

Recognised as the largest cycling department in France after the Gironde, the Landes region has almost 600 km of cycle paths, including 135 km of departmental greenways, and more than 2,000 km of secondary routes, divided into 25 cycle tourism circuits using quiet roads away from car traffic. Perfect for a family cycling holiday!

The Vélodyssée: a great classic for cycling in the Landes

Classified as one of the most beautiful cycle routes in France, the Vélodyssée crosses the Landes and runs along the Atlantic coast between Biscarrosse and Tarnos. The famous cycle route covers more than 170 km of equipped, safe and signposted cycle routes in both directions. From the Eurosol campsite in Vielle-Saint-Girons, cyclists can easily reach the Léon lake, the Courant d’Huchet nature reserve and the Lette Blanche beach in the south, or cycle further north towards the Cap de l’Homy and Contis-Plage.

Selected routes around Moliets, Messanges and Vieux-Boucau

Between Linxe and Soustons, a myriad of cycle paths reveal the charms of the south of the Landes, by the sea, under the pines and by the lakes. From Moliets-et-Maâ, you can pedal to Lake Léon or to the pretty villages of MessangesVieux-Boucau-les-Bains and Seignosse. On the route known as the “Northern Loop”, the latest of the Voies Vertes des Landes links the village of Azur to the north of Lake Soustons in Messanges.

Cycling routes in Mimizan

In Mimizan, along the famous Vélodyssée, almost 40 km of cycle tracks allow cycling enthusiasts to reach the Aureilhan lake or to pedal happily to Contis Plage to discover the famous “barber’s pole” style lighthouse. Around Mimizan, you should also take the greenways which link the typical villages of the Pays de Born such as Bias, Pontenx-les-Forges or Saint-Paul-en-Born.

The cycle paths of Biscarrosse

Bisca Grands Lacs is a real concentrate of the Landes, between forests, lakes, dunes and ocean. Kilometres of cycle tracks link Biscarrosse-Plage, Sanguinet, Parentis-en-Born, Gastes, Sainte-Eulalie and other picturesque Landes villages. Starting from the lake of Biscarosse, the greenway takes a flat and very rolling route through the forest to the small village of Ychoux, in the heart of the Landes de Gascogne National Park. Further north, the track leads straight to the Dune du Pilat, at the entrance to the Bay of Arcachon.

Among the most famous are the lake of Biscarrosse, Cazaux Sanguinet, Parentis, Léon, Soustons and the marine lake of Hossegor. Here too, you can enjoy a holiday with your feet in the water, between swimming, water sports and lazing around.

Hossegor, Seignosse and Capbreton

Hossegor is a world-famous surfing village par excellence and every year it hosts the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro, important stages of the World Surfing Championship. Even if it is possible to start surfing in Hossegor, the resort is more for an intermediate to very experienced public. However, this does not prevent you from watching the professional surfers in action.
Seignosse, Hossegor’s neighbour, will prove to be like Capbreton, more suitable for all levels.

Tradition of the South-West

As part of France’s intangible cultural heritage, the South-West’s férias are unmissable festive events in the Landes and the Basque Country. Once a bullfighting festival used for commercial purposes, today’s férias have changed face, but the traditions are still very much alive. From May to November, numerous events are held in the towns and villages. Among them, the festivals of Dax in the Landes (45 minutes from the Eurosol campsite) and Bayonne in the Basque country.

The férias of Dax, 40 km from the campsite.

Organised around 15 August, “les férias de Dax” attract no less than 500,000 people every year. Dressed in red and white, the “Festayres” (participants) open the festivities in Dax by brandishing their scarves, singing traditional music and finally tying their scarves around their necks, marking the beginning of several days of festivities.

During the day as well as in the evening, numerous activities are organised in the town to the rhythm of the brass bands which delight groups of friends and families alike. They can take part in games (beret throwing, Basque pelota demonstration for example), taste local specialities at picnics and attend the emblematic bullfighting shows and Landes races. In the evening, the music and dancing continues until the end of the night!

A freewheeling holiday! Make the most of your stay at the campsite to discover the Landes by bike on the cycle paths of La Vélodyssée. All in the saddle!

La Vélodyssée in a few words

La Vélodyssée® is 1,200 kilometres of cycle paths that run along the Atlantic coast from Roscoff (Finistère) to Hendaye (Pyrénées-Atlantiques). France’s most famous cycle route crosses the Landes department, along the coast, to the Basque Coast, passing through the EUROSOL campsite. Perfectly signposted and safe, the route alternates between cycle paths, quiet roads and greenways. Ideal for families!

The stages of the Vélodyssée in the Landes

Here is a short summary of what awaits you on this beautiful cycling trip in the Landes:

Biscarrosse > Parentis-en-Born (25 km): from Biscarrosse-Plage, head towards the Cazaux and Sanguinet lakes, then the Hydraviation Museum on the former Latécoère base near the Biscarrosse lake. The track then descends quietly to Parentis-en-Born, “the land of black gold” in the 1950s, as the oil wells on the lake testify.

Parentis-en-Born > Mimizan-Plage (31 km): a lovely ride from the small port of Le Piaou, on the edge of the lake of Parentis-en-Born, to Mimizan, the Pearl of the Côte d’Argent. Halfway along the route, the Vélodyssée passes through the state-owned forest of Sainte-Eulalie and the lake of Aureilhan.

Mimizan-Plage > Léon (47 km): head for the Landes forest as far as the Contis lighthouse, then head for the Cap de l’Homy beach, the Lette Blanche beach, then the Léon lake and its nature reserve. Between these two stops, the 4-star EUROSOL campsite in Vielle-Saint-Girons will be delighted to welcome you.

Léon > Soustons (14 km): this stage of the Vélodyssée takes us to Moliets and its international golf course, between the Landes forest and the ocean, before heading straight on to Messanges and Vieux-Boucau. The opportunity to put on your swimming costumes for a dip on the beach, or to make a small diversions to the magnificent lake of Soustons.

Soustons > Capbreton (20 km): the next part of the ride takes us back to the forest and then on to the most famous surfing spots on the Côte d’Argent, namely Seignosse, Hossegor and Capbreton. On the way, the cyclist in search of a refreshing stop will stop at the banks of the Hossegor marine lake, a remnant of the old Adour river bed. After this, the cycle path takes us directly to Capbreton, a maritime town renowned for its fishing port, its pier and its gouf, the only underwater canyon in the world to be linked to the coast.

The Lette Blanche beach

South of Saint-Girons-Plage, nestling in the Landes forest, the Lette Blanche beach is a well-kept secret on the Côte d’Argent. Away from the main tourist flows, here is a small wild and natural paradise, untouched by any construction, which contrasts with the other beaches of the Landes. It’s a magnificent beach, very popular with swimmers and surfers. Although the beach is supervised all summer long, beware of the currents (les baïnes). Although wild, the Lette Blanche is not devoid of amenities: toilets and a tiralo chair to make the pleasure of swimming accessible to as many people as possible.

Arnaoutchot naturist beach

For naturist enthusiasts, Vielle-Saint-Girons is home to one of the most beautiful naturist beaches in France: Plage d’Arnaoutchot. Located in the extension of Lette Blanche beach, this large and beautiful naturist beach, wild and unspoilt, is supervised in summer. Ideally located on the Landes coast between Arcachon and Biarritz, in the south-west of France, the Eurosol campsite is an ideal destination to visit the Dune du Pilat. This emblematic natural monument of the Arcachon Basin attracts nearly two million visitors every year. Discover it!

Climb the highest dune in Europe

One of the must-sees during your camping holiday on the Côte d’Argent, the Dune du Pilat is worth a visit. Located at the entrance to the Arcachon basin and bordered by the Landes de Gascogne forest, the Dune du Pilat is the highest dune in Europe and the most visited natural site in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Labelled a Grand Site de France since 1994, the star of the Arcachon Basin is also one of the most visited tourist attractions in France, with nearly two million visitors from all over the world.

Height, length, width… the Dune du Pilat can’t hold still!

Located 100 km as the crow flies from our campsite in the Landes, the Dune du Pilat is the highest dune in Europe. In front of you, a gigantic pile of sand of 60 million cubic meters, witness of 4 000 years of history. The mountain of sand is about 3 km long and 600 m wide, and is 102 metres high, according to the latest data from the Observatoire de la Côte Aquitaine. The height of the Dune du Pilat varies every year by several metres (between 100 and 115 m), under the combined action of the wind and the tides.

How to climb to the top of the dune?

The dune is accessible all year round. You have to park in the car park on the forest side. From April to November, a staircase allows you to reach the top of the dune without getting too tired (150 steps). The rest of the year, the staircase is dismantled. So you have to climb the big blonde lady right on the sand. Needless to say, the rolling down the stairs is much more fun than the climbing. In both cases, the reward is as good as the effort: a unique panorama of the Atlantic Ocean and the Landes de Gascogne forest, the Arcachon basin, the tip of Cap-Ferret and the Arguin bank.

What to do at the Dune du Pilat?

In season, many activities and events punctuate your visit to the Dune du Pilat: fun and educational workshops, treasure hunts, observation through a telescope, sunset walks… In addition to excursions and guided hikes, an interpretation trail and an exhibition allow you to discover the hidden face of the Dune du Pilat, its history, the fauna and flora that live there.

Looking for a thrill to spice up your camping holiday on the Aquitaine coast? Try paragliding! Seen from the sky, the Dune du Pilat is even more beautiful! And if you are more comfortable with your feet in the sand, head for the Corniche beach, to swim at the foot of the dune, on the north side. Supervised in summer, this pretty beach faces the Banc d’Arguin. As a little anecdote, you should know that some scenes from the film “Camping” with Franck Dubosc were filmed here!

The numerous cycle tracks around the Eurosol campsite in the Landes give you access to superb and magnificent panoramas. Take advantage of a short or long ride, with family or friends to discover them. If you don’t have a bike, the campsite offers you to rent one at the reception. There is nothing better to explore the Landes region via the Vélodyssée (cycle path that runs alongside our campsite and along the Atlantic coast).

In the top 5 of the most famous dinosaurs, we find the T-Rex, the triceratops and the velociraptor, of course, but also the ankylosaur and the brachiosaur. In front of each giant lizard, an explanatory panel gives more information about the animal. If your children love the adventures of Hiccup, Toothless and their Viking friends, then it’s a safe bet that the Dragon Forest will amaze them. Imagine yourself in a magical forest, in an ancient time, where humans and Dragons.

Today, these enchanted monsters are back in the Landes. You can discover them at Dinosaurs Parc. A trail takes you to meet these creatures with the body of a snake, the legs of a lizard, the claws of an eagle, the mouth of a crocodile or the wings of a bat.

Dino-themed games and rides

If you are looking for activities to do with the family, with the children, Dinosaurs Parc offers great possibilities. The Landes leisure park offers many games, rides and attractions for all ages.

On site, children can have fun on a dozen inflatables, trampolines and small rides such as the dino rodeo, the caterpillar train and the spinning cups. It is also possible to play the apprentice palaeontologist on a treasure hunt in the park. An archaeological excavation workshop is available for children, with brushes in hand, to find dinosaur bones.
